Dr. Wackwitz

Donald L. Wackwitz, M.D. graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Wisconsin with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry.  He received his medical degree from the University of Wisconsin Medical School and was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society. He completed his orthopaedic training at the University of Wisconsin. Dr. Wackwitz is a board certified Fellow of the American academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and has recertified every ten years. He has recently received additional board certification in the subspecialty of Orthopaedic Sports Medicine awarded by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. He is one of two orthopaedic surgeons in Madison with this board certification.

Dr. Wackwitz’s interests include arthroscopy of the shoulder, knee, elbow and ankle, arthroscopic ACL reconstruction, arthroscopic shoulder rotator cuff repair, as well as minimally invasive total and partial knee replacement and total shoulder replacement. Dr. Wackwitz, a native of the near west side of Madison returned to Madison in the spring of 2010 from Green Bay where he was in practice in orthopaedic surgery for 25 years and established the first comprehensive sports medicine clinic in northeastern Wisconsin. He is a member of the WIAA sports medicine advisory committee and served as the team physician for 20 sports at St. Norbert College for over 20 years. For his years of dedicated service he has been elected to the St. Norbert College Athletic hall of fame and in 2009-10 was selected as honorary captain of the St. Norbert Division 3 national finalist hockey team.  In addition to local and state societies Dr. Wackwitz is a member of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine.

Dr. Wackwitz has been a leader and innovator of arthroscopic surgical techniques of the knee and shoulder in Green Bay. He understands the needs of the young and the older athlete and believes that the best short and long term results are achieved by thoughtful planning, careful attention to detail and approaching every person with emphasis on their individual goals.  In other words he has the knowledge and experience to know what works, what doesn’t, and wants to provide you with the information and resources to fully understand your condition and the treatment options. This allows you to proceed with confidence with your surgery and/or rehabilitation and return to your sport or active lifestyle safely without delay or recurrence.

Dr. Wackwitz and his wife, Mary have enjoyed this last year returning to their hometown in Madison and extended families. They have four children, Kim, Brian, Jeff and Dan and three grandchildren. Kim is an orthopedic physical therapist working in Stevens Point at PT Associates outpatient clinic. Brian is a dentist currently practicing in Green Bay. Jeff is a design engineer for Milwaukee Electric Tool in Brookfield. Soon to graduate from UW Eau Claire, Dan is a graduate student in Mathematics at the University of Iowa. Mary enjoys being involved in a number of volunteer projects as well as helping take care of her grandchildren.

In his spare time Dr. Wackwitz enjoys challenging activities. He is an instrument rated commercial pilot and enjoys skiing, sailing, windsurfing, ice boating and cycling.
