Our Services
At the orthopedic office of JOHN S. ROGERSON, M.D. and DON L. WACKWITZ, M.D. we provide state-of-the-art, comprehensive orthopaedic care of the shoulder, hip and knee and sports medicine injuries (click on icons to the right to learn more). This care encompasses all of the non-operative treatment modalities (such as exercise, nutritional supplementation and physical therapy), minimally invasive arthroscopic outpatient surgery, and major reconstructive and joint replacement procedures.
In addition to our clinical and surgical expertise, you’ll appreciate how we treat you as a person – not as a chart, a diagnosis, an enrollee or a market share. We care for each patient as if he or she is a family member. First of all, we listen. Then, after a thorough exam and appropriate diagnostic studies, we make a diagnosis. We explain all of the different treatment options and make knowledgeable recommendations for your particular case. We attempt non-operative treatment modalities first and proceed with operative intervention only after all of the conservative options have been exhausted.
With our team approach, we are especially proud of our thorough patient education before, during and after surgery – accomplished with detailed written material, personal discussion and often a video review of your arthroscopic procedure, if desired.
Dr. Rogerson’s and Dr. Wackwitz’s focus is on returning each patient to his or her previous normal activity level, whether that be in a sporting activity, work situation or just activities of daily living. They employ the latest surgical advances, often accompanied with earlier and more aggressive rehabilitation programs. This makes it possible for each patient to return to his or her fullest potential, faster. Dr. Rogerson and Dr.Wackwitz have been active in arthroscopic surgery for over 25 years, having trained with Dr. Bill Clancy at the University of Wisconsin. These procedures, accomplished through small puncture incisions, are less painful because less tissue is disturbed during the surgery. They are akin to building a ship inside a bottle using video game-like equipment.
Drs. Rogerson and Wackwitz were one of the region’s earliest orthopedists to perform these arthroscopic techniques in the knee, shoulder, hip, elbow and ankle joints. Both are presently at the forefront of arthroscopic rotator cuff repair and impingement and instability surgery in the shoulder. Dr. Rogerson further concentrates on hip labral and impingement surgery and general knee arthroscopy. Dr. Wackwitz also excels in complex knee arthroscopy and ACL ligament reconstruction as well as elbow and ankle sports related arthroscopy.
When a patient’s joint is severely destroyed by trauma or arthritis, Drs. Rogerson and Wackwitz move into reconstructive or replacement surgery. Dr. Rogerson”s most recent passion is performing metal on metal “resurfacing” and “big femoral head” arthroplasty of the hip, while Dr. Wackwitz excels in minimally invasive partial and complete replacement of the knee and shoulder. With these surgeries, the team education and treatment approach is especially helpful. Patients are sent to physical therapy to learn their exercises and precautions well before their surgery, thus allowing them to be confident and relaxed when surgery approaches. Careful follow-up after surgery is the standard for all of our patients.
